Project Dreidel is a partnership of CJP and Jewish Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Boston (JBBBS), which aims to give holiday gifts to children in need and young adults with disabilities. The program offers two giving options: giving toward toys and clothes and giving toward winter break kits, which include restaurant and grocery cards, movie tickets and more. This week I chat with Danielle Ain, a longtime Jewish Big Brothers Big Sisters volunteer, about what drew her to the program, her little sister, and how Project Dreidel inspires her.

How did you end up volunteering for Jewish Big Brothers Big Sisters?

Four Questions with Danielle Ain, Jewish Big Brothers Big Sisters VolunteerI was always very busy in college, but once I graduated I found myself with a ton of spare time. I realized I was sitting on the couch watching television too often for it to be good for me. I was a camp counselor growing up and knew I loved spending time with kids and teenagers. In February, it will be five years since I was matched with my little sister.

Tell me about your Little Sister.

Katya turned 17 in August. We were paired when she was 12 and I was 22, so we’ve really grown up together. It’s hard to believe she’s now in high school. We have so much fun together—we usually have lunch, go to the movies and do a little shopping. Last time we hung out we went to the new Assembly Row and had a ton of fun. JBBBS teams up with many local companies and organizations and helps provide free tickets and things for us to do with our siblings.

Tell me about Project Dreidel.

JBBBS and CJP have a close relationship. One of the main things they do together is Project Dreidel. It’s really remarkable how two small and very powerful organizations can come together and do great things. For most families participating in the program, money is really tight. This program is super valuable for those families.

Do you have any special plans for the winter?

We always have our sibling anniversary in February. We were just talking about what we wanted to do this year to celebrate. We’ve decided to get pizza from the place across the street from my apartment, watch ABC Family’s “Pretty Little Liars” and paint our nails!
