From Conflict to Peace – Lessons of Diplomacy from Other Nations

October 21, 2014 Newton $15.00 - $18.00

Given the current political climate in Israel, can models of diplomacy from Northern Ireland, South Africa and elsewhere help point a path to lasting peace? Can the legacies of nations once beleaguered by genocide, tribal warfare, apartheid and oppression help light a way forward? From Conflict to Peace – Lessons of Diplomacy will be the topic of a discussion at the Leventhal-Sidman Jewish Community Center (333 Nahanton Street) in Newton on Tuesday, October 21 at 7:30pm.

Moderating the event will be Tom Ashbrook, host of National Public Radio’s On Point show.

Panelists are Dr. Fran Buntman who grew up in South Africa and teaches criminal justice, punishment and law in the Sociology Department at George Washington University; Dr. Francis Costello, a native of the U.S. who has lived and worked in Belfast for past 15 years as a business consultant; and Bernie Glassman, a pioneer in the American Zen Movement, founder of Zen Peacemakers and co-author of Bearing Witness: A Zen Masters Lessons in Making Peace.

The event is part of the Jonathan Samen Hot Buttons, Cool Conversations Discussion Series at the JCC – a program of the Ryna Greenbaum JCC Center for the Arts. Cost is $18. Students and seniors: $15. For tickets, contact 617-965-5226, boxoffice@jccgb.org or visit www.bostonjcc.org/hotbuttons
