Boston Jewish Food Conference

March 8, 2015 $15.00 - $36.00

Our conference fosters new dynamics and connections within the Jewish community by utilizing food and farming to discuss the intersections of justice, sustainability, and culture against a background of Jewish traditions and contemporary life.

1:00-5:30 Multiple workshop sessions (In the kitchen and classroom)

5:30-7:00 Community Shuk (marektplace) featuring Dinner prepared by conference participants, do-It-Yourself sessions, cooking demonstrations, advocacy opportunities and tabling by community organizations and a silent auction.

Our workshops will explore the many factors that impact what we eat: individual choices, congregational and community affiliations, and the development of public policies. In particular, we are eager to explore the interplay between the variables at each of these levels so that we can understand the basic foundation of our diets. Our Jewish identities and values are similarly influenced by factors at multiple levels: the Jewish community groups that exist where we live, or the interpersonal relationships we form with Jewish and non-Jewish individuals. Our identities influence how we choose to consume particular foods, based on environmental impact, rabbinic supervision, cultural tradition, and/or public policies.

We seek to recognize that the foods we eat are not always a product of free choice; constraints like economic and social inequalities prevent many people from having the freedom to make food choices. As Jewish food consumers, we hope to engage with these issues and learn where we can fit in to the work being done to create a more just and equitable food system.
